Imagine, for a moment, being in Pilot's shoes. You have the authority and power to make a life or death decision. And the hard part is, you KNOW the truth but it's just not enough.
Pilot knew that Jesus was innocent of His charges but he chose to let the crowd lead his decision. So what will you do? How close can you be and not be changed?
